The dark, nearly horizontal line at the upper right that intersects the rim of Halemaʻumaʻu (HMM) is the April 1982 spatter rampart. That rampart is on the floor of Kaluapele (the caldera).
The floor of HMM is the grey area at the left, with its dark wall rising and nearly obscured by fume at the upper left of the image.
The lua (pit) inset on the floor of HMM is the MUCH enlarged vent that opened in March 2008.
There is a deeper section on the far side of the main lua where apparently much of the steam is being emitted.
Instability, caused by more than 5 feet of subsidence during the past month, is demonstrated by the many cracks ringing the floor of Kaluapele surrounding HMM, as well as on the floor of HMM itself.
