Kaluapele

On the Island of Hawaiʻi, Kaluapele (the pit of pele or Pele) crowns the summit region of the volcano Kīlauea.

Kīlauea Update, SUN, June 3, 2018, afternoon: Kapoho

ahhhh...ʻōlaʻi continue up here, while down there, at the eastern tip of our island, very near Kumukahi...

Green Lake, embraced by the arms of Kapoho Crater, was filled yesterday (060218) afternoon.  Compare, if you will, the following two maps.  The first, surveyed in 1922 and published in 1930, depicts nearly all the same features as the second, and includes the route of the Consolidated Railroad.

A current USGS topo below differs from the above primarily because it outlines the Lava Flow of 1960.

The aerial photo below was taken by USGS this morning at 7.  The fishpond wall labelled on the topo is clearly visible.

With a bit of turning, the map below can be compared with the photo above.  That fat redness  on the map is perhaps a consequence of the flattish terrain allowing pele to spread.
Auē...
