Kaluapele

On the Island of Hawaiʻi, Kaluapele (the pit of pele or Pele) crowns the summit region of the volcano Kīlauea.

Tuesday, February 2, 2021. If no can see...

brrrrISK... Itʻs just after 1p (I know...a late start given other duties today), and itʻs 61dF outside!  Brrrr.

Misty foggy now, but the day started bluesky clear.  While I lay abed just after sunrise, a single pendant raindrop on a hāpuʻu frond caught my attention:  rubyred and flashing.  Then, as the angle of the rising sun subtly changed, so did the colors prismatic.  Great start to the day.

Wanted to check on the ōlaʻi I didnʻt feel yesterday.  I was driving.  Another aftershock of the May 2018 M6.9, half way between Puʻuʻōʻō (see the wisp of fume?) and the coast.

And, as is usual, movement was registered on Uēkahuna Tilt Meter, amongst hills and valleys.

What a difference 10 minutes makes!  Looks like Kona wind blowing plume W to E...

But the faithful Thermal Cam allows views through enshrouding mist fume steam.  This image at the same time as the whiteout one above.  Though as the Update states, the west vent seems crusted over, pele flows into the loko ahi.

Kinda short today.  And tomorrow is town erranding, so stay tuned on Thursday...

Oh.  And a reminder:  Traditions continue, even during CoViD...

MALASADA  DAY (aka Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, etc.) is on Tuesday (!), February 16.  Try make?  Go...

Till next time,

As always, with aloha,

  1. Trying to get my wahine to try the malasada recipe. "Lisa, did you see that Bobby posted about his Grandma Rapozo's malasadas. They look really ʻono!" Hū ka ʻaka!
