Kaluapele

On the Island of Hawaiʻi, Kaluapele (the pit of pele or Pele) crowns the summit region of the volcano Kīlauea.

Kilauea Update, May 3, 2018, 3pm

All,

Back from a walk to the 82 Flow on the floor of Kaluapele.  HOT and sunny!  Well-deserved after 3 months of rain.

Puuoo has no molten material in it.  The crater is funnel-shaped and quite deep.  Theyʻre calculating the number now.  A field crew was on the rim during the rockfall-generated ash cloud.  A gentle shake then the cloud rose silently...

Because trades are back, the cloud was blown SW of PO and became a pink smudge, visible from Keanakakoi.

The cloud is pink because the layers of lava making up PO have been baked, oxidizing the iron to red.  The cloud is comprised of ash particles, pink because of their small size.

The 1030am EQ has been UPGRADED to 5.0.  Depending on where you are (the substrate lava), shaking is felt differently in different places, on different volcanoes and whether or not youʻre on ash or on lava.  The depth of the EQ and of course its magnitude affects where and how itʻs felt.

LERZ EQs seem to be declining.

The summit and at PO are still both deflating.  The lake in HMM continues to drop.
